Tutorial to Install Windows 8 OS from your USB Flash Drive

Microsoft’s Windows 8 platform is reinforcing its marketing strategy by introducing new ways to dominate the PC world. Till date, you were installing the new version of Windows by either using an image file or a conventional disc but now, the days are gone when you have to do so. By now, you can install the OS directly from any pen drive. Previously, you had to carry out some vital tasks like backing up data, clearing space for new OS, reinstalling and many more. Go through the discussions below to learn the procedure of installing Windows 8 from a pen drive without exerting yourself to burn a DVD or download ISO files.

Requirements

The procedure is quite simple, just like you install any other Windows OS versions but still, you need to learn. Requirements are a utility program, 16GB or higher storage drive, Windows 8 ISO file and WinRAR. However, an external storage device would be much better to use as they are much faster than USB device. Follow the instructions carefully to install Windows 8 from a pen drive.

Instructions

Firstly, you need to install the WinRAR on to your PC after which you will have to extract the ‘install.wim’ from the Windows 8 ISO file and place or locate it to the desktop. Well, the file would be located under the folder named as ‘sources’ and would be of about 2GB in size.
Next, download the utility named as ‘GimageX’ and extract the file to a folder on to your desktop. Note: Before going for the utility, you need to make your pen drive ready by checking the requirements such as back-up, etc.
Now, plug or connect your USB device to your computer and wait till the drivers are installed in your PC. Once your storage device is recognized by the computer, you need to start the Windows command prompt and then type the following commands:

- Diskpart- this command performs repartition and formats the new drive.
- List disk- this command enables you to know the list of drives on system. Remember to note down the drive number of your USB device.
- Select disk#- you should replace # with the disk number when you enter this command.
- Clean- this command cleans and wipes the whole partition table of the USB drive.
- Create partition primary- this command creates a primary partition on the USB drive.
- Select Partition 1- this command selects the primary partition for rest of the process.
- Format fs=ntfs quick
- Assign
- Active- this command makes the partition Active to enable booting.
- Exit
Once you are done with the commands, your pen drive is now ready to install Windows 8 operating system. Now, start the downloaded utility ‘GimageX’ and click on the tab ‘Apply’ and remember to specify the ‘INSTALL.WIM’ file.
Next, select USB drive and click ‘Apply’ in the destination field. Once the GimageX displays, know that the process of installation is complete.
Exit the utility and start the command prompt again. Your USB drives are not bootable so you have to specify a command on the command prompt to make them bootable.
A window with a destination field named as F:\ will appear on your screen and here, you need to replace the drive letter of your USB drive accordingly. When you are done, quit the program.
Finally, shut down your PC and go to the BIOS of your system. Here, enable booting from pen derive and reboot your computer. When it asks for the serial key or other necessary details, specify them accordingly. The process of installation is the same.
