Since I'm in a ranting mood, don't you just find it annoying the way SkyCable inserts advertisements for premium cable service, promos, dog food, etc., on channels that's aren't supposed to have commercials? Isn't the reason why we're paying for cable service is to avoid the numerous commercials on broadcast television? Since the programs and channels are already being paid for with our monthly subscription fees, then what's the big idea with inserting all those unwelcome ads?

Nowadays, we're bombarded by spam, adware, pop-ups, SMS text ads, and now cable ads.

I just find it all intrusive. Don't you?

Ah...maybe tomorrow I'll be in a better mood.

Its a new month.

Enough is enough....

Posted by Unknown 0 komentar

After eleven days of following up on my PLDT myDSL account's sluggish performance, I've finally had enough. I'm lodging a complaint with the DTI tomorrow morning.

What got my goat was their insistence that the problem was due to a network problem in our area. Imagine my annoyance when it turns out that my sister's DSL account was performing within 90% of her supposed allocated bandwidth, and it has been performing that way for the past several weeks now. Me? I'm stuck at less than a third of the bandwidth that I should be getting, and that's almost for the past two weeks.

Network problem? Network problem my a**.

That was the standard reason they gave my sister when she was having similarly sluggish service not so long ago. At the time I was getting about 430 kbps, which is significantly faster than what she was getting (but still way, way below the promised 768 kbps). After getting an earful from her, her service finally stabilized. Good for her. The service I'm getting nowadays is just plain crap.

It all started after I downgraded my DSL account without paying the downgrade fee of P5,000.00, which I requested that they waive (see previous post here).

Since that time my bandwidth allocation has went down from somewhere in the 160-180 kbps range. The last time I checked, it went even further down, in the 130s. There are even times that it goes below a hundred.

Does PLDT have a standing policy of giving subscribers who downgraded their accounts without paying a downgrade fee a hard time? I don't know, but it somehow feels that way.

And I'm getting really suspicious of the 172 hotline. Most of the time the customer service representives don't know squat why their service sucks. Basically, all they do is forward requests, and listen to irate subscribers like myself. They hardly have any coordination with their technical departments, or billing departments for that matter. The last customer service representative I ranted to told me that they themselves hardly get any feedback from their technical departments regarding the problems they forward.

But most of all, I hate it when they downright just lie. I find it downright insulting that they tell me that my area has a network problem, when my other siblings, my sister, and my brother who's also a subscriber, are getting acceptable service. Are they isolating my account for some reason?

There was this one time that they asked me to leave my ADSL modem on, so that they could remote test it. This was last week. I'm not even sure if they actually did that. All I know is that I'm still getting crappy service. There was this other time that a customer service representative called me up early in the afternoon to tell me that my account has been adjusted. I checked, and no, it was still stuck at the same slow speed. And there was even a time that they claimed that my slow speed is because of the fact that my downgrade request hasn't been properly posted on their system yet. This really made my blood boil, since if my account hadn't been downgraded yet since it hadn't been posted on their system yet, then why the hell did they lower my bandwidth?

To add insult to injury, they advised me to call the 171 hotline first to follow up on that service request, them to call them back at the 172 customer service line. For God's sakes, these people aren't even coordinated.

The bottomline is that they have been giving me all sorts of reasons and explanations, all of which are just full of holes and serve as indicators at how lousy their service is.

Frankly, I'm just getting tired of PLDT giving me the runaround. What's even more annoying is that they expect me to pay the full amount of P999 when they're only giving me 30-40% of the bandwidth I'm entitled to. Shouldn't I have a rebate or something? Maybe I oughta just pay them 30-40% of the P999 monthly fee as well.

Oh well. Even if I file a complaint with the DTI, I strongly doubt it if I would be the first. But I'll do it anyway.

After that maybe with the NTC...

There's nothing worse for business than a dissatisfied customer with a lot of time (well, not that much time) on his hands.

And if you're looking for broadband service, avoid PLDT myDSL like the plague. Your sanity will thank you for it.

Breathing
Lifehouse

I'm finding my way back to sanity again
Though I don't really know what
I'm going to do when I get there
Take a breath and hold on tight
Spin around one more time
And gracefully fall back to the arms of Grace

I am hanging on every word you say
And even if you don't want to speak tonight
That's alright, alright with me
'Cause I want nothing more than to sit
Outside heaven's door and listen to you breathing
Is where I want to be

I'm looking past the shadows
Of my mind into the truth and
I'm trying to identify
The voices in my head
God which one's you?
Let me feel one more time
What it feels like to feel
And break these calluses off me
One more time

'Cause I am hanging on every word you say
And even if you don't want to speak tonight
That's alright, alright with me
'Cause I want nothing more than to sit
Outside your door and listen to you breathing
Is where I want to be

I don't want a thing from you
Bet you're tired of me waiting
For the straps to fall
Off your table to the ground
I just want to be here now

'Cause I am hanging on every word you say
And even if you don't want to speak tonight
That's alright, alright with me
'Cause I want nothing more than to sit
Outside heaven's door and listen to you breathing
Is where I want to be

I am hanging on every word you say
And even if you don't want to speak tonight
That's alright, alright with me
'Cause I want nothing more than to sit
Outside heaven's door and listen to you breathing
Is where I want to be

Are law degrees equivalent to masteral degrees?

Posted by Unknown 0 komentar

Are law degrees equivalent to masteral degrees for appointment to division chief (Salary Grade 24) positions in the civil service?

Due to the absence of a definitive answer to this question on the internet, I have opted to post one, with the hope that this would help clear up the issue.

You wouldn't believe the number of times I've encountered this question, and hardly anyone I asked, even our Human Resources Department (HRD), could give an objective answer, nor provide a valid legal basis.

Well, after some research, and a letter to the Civil Service Commission (CSC) itself, I believe the issue is now fully settled.

The key to answering this question lies in CSC Resolution No. 030962 dated September 12, 2003 otherwise known as the Revised Policies on Qualification Standards.

The relevant provision is Par. 9 which states:

Completion of the degrees of Bachelor of Laws and Doctor of Medicine from a CHED-recognized institution shall be considered appropriate education for appointment to division chief positions or positions requiring a master's degree the duties of which do not involve practice of profession covered by bar/board laws.

While this provision is already quite clear and unambiguous, some authorities, especially those more familiar with the old rules can't seem to accept the interpretation of this provision (not that it really needs any) that an underbar or underboard law or medical degree holder is automatically considered to possess the equivalent of a masteral degree for appointment to division chief positions. Even our own HRD didn't think so. So, to finally resolve this issue once and for all, a colleague and I took it upon ourselves to seek the opinion of the CSC.

And what did the CSC have to say?

CSC Opinion No. 35 dated January 27, 2006 unequivocally states:

A graduate of Bachelor of Laws may be considered for appointment to a division chief position in the corporation including to that which is located in the Legal Department, provided that the subject position does not involve the practice of profession covered by bar/board laws.

So, In a word, the answer to the question is a resounding YES. A law degree IS considered the equivalent of a masteral degree as far as appointments to division chief positions are concerned, and the bases are Par. 9 of CSC Resolution No. 030962 dated September 12, 2003, and CSC Opinion No. 35 dated January 27, 2006.

Can't put it any more clearer than that.

When will PLDT myDSL stop sitting on its ass and give me the bandwidth I'm paying for? It's almost a week since I complained about this, not only have they failed to adjust my speed, as it turned out my downgrade request made several weeks ago hasn't even been posted yet, resulting in my account being trapped in limbo.

And where does that leave me? Here, plodding along at a pathetic 177 kbps, less than half the bandwidth I should be getting.

Its a wonder they still have subscribers with service this lousy.

If you're looking for a broadband service provider, save yourself the aggravation. Subscribe somewhere else.

Midnight thoughts....

Posted by Unknown Rabu, 24 Mei 2006 0 komentar

It's five minutes past midnight, and I'm still awake. Must be all that caffeine and nicotine that I find myself relying on to in order to keep my mind alert while reading what seems to pages and pages of text.

Well, the bottomline is, I'm not the least bit sleepy. Maybe in an hour or so I can turn in.

So I sit here in front of my PC, typing whatever comes to mind, while listening to whatever random song Winamp blasts out through the speakers. Right now its playing a song entitled Living in Oblivion, by Anything Box from my 90s folder. I remember when I first heard this song, I think I was in my sophomore year at MIT. The song really lodged itself in my brain since it was basically what I felt about myself at the time - literally being afraid of making the wrong choices, eventually ending up in, well, oblivion. Its quite funny if you think about it. Fast forward about 16 years, and I still have those fears. I guess its because of all the uncertainty about what the future holds. It seems nowadays nothing is certain. With everything that's happening in the local political scene, the economy, and the world, nothing really seems to be set in stone.

Earlier today I bought P200.00 worth of gasoline. That's only about five liters. What a rip. When I first learned to drive, gas was about P9.00 a liter, and P200.00 would buy half a tank of gas for my old 1983 1.3L Ford Laser Hatchback. Those were the days. I guess its but natural to long for the past at times. Things seemed so easier and less complicated then. Sometimes when we get older, the past can be the only thing that can keep us going.

Accept certain inalienable truths. Prices will rise, politicians will philander, you too will get old, and when you do you’ll fantasize that when you were young prices were reasonable, politicians were noble and children respected their elders.

- Mary Schmich

So true, don't you think?

I'm rambling ain't I?

And my grammar and sentence construction seem to somewhat faulty.

I guess it's about time I turn in.

Who knows? Maybe I'll dream of something nice. :-)

Oh well. Tomorrow's another day.

Stop the movie! Or else....

Posted by Unknown Selasa, 23 Mei 2006 0 komentar

Theaters in Manila have stopped exhibition of the controversial film The Da Vinci Code on the basis of a resolution filed by the City Council which makes it “a crime to exhibit films which offend a religion”. It also states that “The movie is undoubtedly offensive and contrary to established religious beliefs which cannot take precedence over the right of the persons involved in the film to freedom of expression.”

Those theaters who insisted on continuing to show the movie were threatened with imprisonment of one year and a fine of P5,000.

My question is, since when has a City Council resolution been a valid basis for criminal prosecution, and subsequent penalization through incarceration and the payment of a fine?

Can a person indeed be imprisoned and fined on the basis of a mere resolution, which, compared to an ordinance, is only temporary in nature and should only tackle ministerial issues?

Shouldn't the proper course of action for the City Council is simply to enact an ordinance prohibiting the exhibition of the film?

Could they even do that? An ordinance should not contravene the Constitution or any other law, and yet, an ordinance to the effect of prohibiting the exhibition of any movie would be a violation of the fundamental right to self-expression.

Is the movie considered an affront to the Christian faith even when it is nothing more than fiction? Of course this point is highly debatable.

While the City Council's efforts in preventing exhibition of the film is understandable, given the rather delicate suppositions that the movie is based on, I hardly think think that the issuance of a mere resolution threatening any theater owner with imprisonment and a fine hardly qualifies as a suitable course of action.

It is rife with procedural and substantial infirmities, and to my humble opinion, is not a valid source of criminal law.

They could have simply opted to express their disapproval of their film through resolution, and discouraged their constituents from watching the movie.

But no, they have to go as far as threaten people with jail time and a fine.

If anyone does go to jail, or pays a fine on the supposed authority of a City Council resolution, I think it would make a very good test case. I think such punishment, or even the mere threat of it, is illegal, unconstitutional, immoral, and a smear on our democratic processes and institutions.

I wonder if they even realize that?

They could have instead used their charms to persuade theater owners from showing the film. They could have appealed to their sense of civic duty or social responsibility. Instead, the City of Manila would rather wave a big stick around and threaten anyone who disagrees with them.

Henry Sy and Jose Go, two of the richest retailers in the Philippines (owners of SM and Ever Gotesco, respectively) have voluntarily opted to refrain from exhibiting the films from their establishments, yet no law was used to threaten them.

Ah, whatever. It all seems so surreal to me. The Da Vinci Code seemingly has a tendency to bring out the worst in people. Like it has in this instance.

Separation of Church and State. Is it just a political buzzword which in reality hardly has any meaning? Is it proper for a municipal corporation, a local government unit, to delve into matters of faith and morality? Is that not the raison d’être of the Church and other religious organizations?

Like I mentioned in a previous post, I think these politicians acting as "self-appointed guardians of the faith" should just stick to matters of state and leave issues of faith and religion alone.

Something to think about. If there's one good thing about The Da Vinci Code, it certainly has gotten everyone thinking.

And he said unto them, Render therefore unto Caesar the things which be Caesar's, and unto God the things which be God's.

- Luke 20:25

Call of Duty 2

Posted by Unknown Senin, 22 Mei 2006 0 komentar

Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting

I just finished the last couple of missions in Call of Duty 2 during the weekend, and I'm still suffering a bit of shellshock. Yeah, I know, it's been quite a while since this game first came out, I guess I just haven't had the time to play computer games as much I would want to - and for good reason, but that's a topic for another post.

I was wondering what to put down in this short pseudo-review, but I guess I can summarize my observations in a few paragraphs or so. There isn't much to say actually. If you must know right away, the game's simply great. :-)

Despite the game's greatness however, it is still a World War II FPS, and nowadays this genre has become so common that it has basically worn out all of the novelty associated with it. I've played basically all of the World War II themed shooters out there, and frankly, I'm tired of shooting Jerries (and Japs, for that matter).

It's lack of originality and freshness notwithstanding, it's definitely an awesome game. Just about as good as the original Call of Duty, only with better graphics (thanks to an all new graphics engine), and with more (much more) challenging missions. Like the first one, you play as a number of different soldiers in different campaigns throughout the course of the war. The gameplay is almost identical, with the exception of a new "shock" system. Now, you don't have to keep scrambling for medikits and health packs whenever you life bar goes down. In fact, there isn't even a life bar to speak of. All you have to do is get some cover, and in about a minute or so, you're back to full health.

While this system of health recovery takes a down a few notches from realism, it adds a couple to gameplay quite a bit, since you don't have to worry about your health that much anymore. Seeing red? It means you've been hurt bad, and another round or blast will take you out. Just take a breather, avoid further injury, and you're good to go in no time at all. Sometimes its easier said than done though, with all the bullets flying around. Don't think though that this will make the game a walk in the park. You will die countless times in the game. That's virtually a guarantee. In fact, I would go as far as say that the "shock" system is a necessity in some of the other missions, particularly when hordes of enemy soldiers charge at you from all directions. A conventional health system would be useless in this case.

You also get to use smoke grenades, which are actually quite useful when you need instant cover. Makes you wonder why this is the first time anyone actually thought of integrating this feature in a FPS. It also enhances the realism of the game, by giving you an additional means of accomplishing a mission by relying on stealth. The bad part though, is that if the enemy can't see you, it also means that you can't see them as well. :-)

Photobucket - Video and Image HostingAs far as everything else goes, its a true blue Call of Duty title which basically means it still features everything else that made the first game a standout: intense battles, awesome missions, numerous weapons, vehicles, incredible enemy AI, etc. And yes, the graphics are really that much better. Quite a feat, since the original game was no slouch in the eye candy department either.

The AI of my bot allies, on the other hand are somewhat suspect. I can't remember the number of times I shot an ally simply because he insisted on walking or positioning himself in my line of fire. Or maybe I'm just trigger happy. :-)

Of course, the graphical improvements don't come without a price, and that is more powerful hardware. While the minimum requirements call for at least a 1.4 GHz class CPU, 512 MB of RAM, and a GeForce 4 or a Radeon 9200, you'd be hard pressed to enjoy the game running on such a rig. Call of Duty 2 has garnered a reputation for bringing even high end machines to a slowdown, and its not really surprising given the amount of graphical detail.

A colleague hardly gets playable framerates running the game on an Athlon XP 2500+ with 512 MB or RAM and a Radeon 9500, even with all settings on low. The game works pretty well for me though on an Athlon XP 2400+ with 1.5 GB of RAM and a Radeon 9550, and an Athlon 64 3000+ with 1 GB of RAM, using a GeForce 6800LE. I would surmise that the game loves RAM, and a lot of it at that (a trait of many recent games). Make sure you have at least a gig before playing this game. Half a gig simply won't cut it. If you have tons of a RAM, a dual-core processor, and SLI, I envy you. You'll be able to see the game in all of its glory. I didn't. :-)

Not much else to say. It's without question a great game (I said that already, didn't I?), if you have a rig robust enough to handle it. World War II based shooters however, are getting a little long in the tooth. You won't really see much that different in this game, just a lot of the same stuff. Only this time, it's better. And more difficult.

What did you expect? War is hell. :-)

When will it all end?

Posted by Unknown Minggu, 21 Mei 2006 0 komentar

It has been almost two weeks since PLDT downgraded my PLDT myDSL account (see previous post here). Unfortunately, from that time on, I've been receiving less than half the bandwidth I'm entitled to. The P999 monthly plan should give me 384 kbps of bandwidth. I'm only getting speeds in the 160-180 kbps range.

It's actually the same thing before, when I was still paying two grand a month. They should have been giving me 768 kbps then, I was only getting about half that bandwidth, somewhere in the 430-450 kbps range.

When will these people get their act together and just give me the bandwidth that I'm paying for? I called their customer service number and complained about the low bandwidth allocation two days ago, and up to now I'm still browsing and downloading at such low speeds.

I'm getting tired of PLDT screwing me around. I only hope they fix this before I do something drastic. Like going back to dial-up. :-)

Suffice it to say, that I'm not a happy customer.

The Da Vinci Code....

Posted by Unknown Jumat, 19 Mei 2006 0 komentar

Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting

Yesterday I got to see the movie everyone has been talking about, Ron Howard's film adaptation of the Dan Brown bestseller, The Da Vinci Code. I watched it at Theater Mall in Greenhills, since it was the closest theater that was actually showing it. Apparently SM and Ever Gotesco, the two malls closest to where I live opted not to show it, no doubt because of the controversies hounding the film since day one.

It's not even shown in Manila, the Philippine capital itself, due to an ordinance (actually, it was just a resolution) enacted by the city council.

Even the Executive Secretary Eduardo Ermita got into the picture, calling the film "blasphemous".

Such a disappointment.

Like I keep repeating over and over, the movie, and the book it was based on, is just a work of fiction.

Somehow I can't really understand why it has gotten so many people riled up. I guess it's because of the immense popularity of the book and the hype that has been surrounding the movie.

You wanna know what I think? Oh yes you do, otherwise you wouldn't be wasting time reading this gibberish. :-)

I think the whole lot of people deriding the movie and book are hypocritical prudes, and the politicans riding on the issue are dangerously treading the line separating issues of Church and State, saying what the Church wants to hear in order to court favor and support. We're talking about freedom of expression here people. Politicians here in the Philippines have been known to do say anything to please the Church as long as there has been politics, hence the government's wishy-washy attitude on touchy subjects such as contraception and divorce.

In 2001, a movie entitled The Body was shown starring Antonio Banderas. The premise of the movie was the discovery of the crucified remains of a man dated back to the 1st century AD, purported to be belonging to Jesus Christ. That movie also hinted at the mortality of Jesus, and yet I don't remember that much flack over its showing, compared to the fuss over The Da Vinci Code. All we have are people grandstanding at the film's expense.

Some of these politicians have been linked to corruption, electoral fraud, violations of human rights, and even inclinations toward a dictatorial form of government, never even mind what they do in their private lives, and yet they lambast the film as self-appointed guardians of the faith.

What a lot of bull. This is hypocrisy and duplicity at its greatest.

Do these people think we're stupid to believe anything, like a fictional movie? Hell, I don't even trust these politicians to do what's right for the country, and I'm going to trust them with my faith?

Frankly, I believe I have the right to decide for myself what to believe in. I don't need the opinions of hypocrites telling me what is blasphemous or not.

I have seen the movie. Did it change my faith? No, not really. I still believe in the same things I did even before I entered the theater, even before I read the book. It'll take much more than a movie to do that. And if I ever really decide to change what I believe in, it will be because I made the choice for myself, not because of any movie, and not because some bum made the choice for me.

The more people say negative things about the film and the book, the more credence they give to it. Like I always say, why all the fuss over a made up story?

*sigh*

Moving on, so how was the movie?

Pretty good actually. I have some nitpicks however.

A lot of details were lost in translating the novel to film. Can't be helped of course, given the limitations of a feature-length movie, even one lasting more than two hours. It remains for the most part a faithful adaptation, though there were some deviations from the novel, no doubt made for better theatrical presentation. I won't discuss the deviations here, better for you to watch the movie and see for yourself.

Tom Hanks makes a good, but not perfect, Robert Langdon. There are times that his acting seems wooden, highly uncharacteristic for an actor of his caliber, but he pulls it off nonetheless. This may not be his best acting job ever, but I can't think of anyone else more suited for the role. Not at this moment at least.

Audrey Tautou is petite and unassuming, but works the role of Sophie Neveu with strong character and determination, and even a hint of innocence and sex appeal, making her perfect for the part. Jean Reno is a given for the role of French Police Captain Bezu Fache, Paul Bettany (I remember him notably as William's herald in the movie A Knight's Tale) makes an interesting Silas, and Ian McKellen (X-Men's Magneto) fits the role of the eccentric Sir Leigh Teabing like a glove.

I find the choice of Alfred Molina to play the role of Bishop Aringarossa an amusing one. Not because he was unable to do the role justice, since he made quite a satisfactory portrayal of the hard-line Opus Dei bishop, but of certain indirect connections. You see, his most popular role of late was that of Dr. Otto Octavius (Doc Ock) in the last Spider-Man film. Spider-Man's previous antagonist, the Green Goblin, was played by Willem Dafoe, who incidentally, portrayed Jesus Christ in the equally controversial The Last Temptation of Christ, which also hints at relationship between Jesus Christ and Mary Magdalene. Don't mind me, I have this habit of seeing patterns where none exist. :-)

In fine, the movie was well made. There are times however, that the story seems forced, as if it was bending over backwards just to integrate certain details from the novel, but not that much to make you squirm in your seat. I guess the breadth and scope of the novel was just too much for the screenplay to capture. Acting was top-notch, though far from perfect, and the movie has to be admired for its earnest efforts to draw the viewer in the story by explaining key historical facts through the use of reenactments and even computer graphics. All of these observations notwithstanding, at the end of day, what will get people talking will be the premise of the movie itself.

I won't dwell on that anymore, I think I have written more than enough on that particular topic on past posts.

Suffice it to say, if you're in search of a good, suspense-filled yarn, this movie is perfect for you. If you're looking for answers with regard to your faith, this movie, or any movie for that matter is the wrong place to look for it. You're better off looking for it within yourself. If you're the type who's drawn to history, make sure you look everything up before believing anything. True, there are historical bases for most of the precepts of the movie, but learn for yourself which is fact, and which is fiction.

Does that mean I'm endorsing the movie? Not really. Admittedly it's not for everyone. If you find the crux of the movie disturbing, I advise you not to watch it. But if all you're looking for is entertainment, you won't be disappointed.

If you're looking for answers, seek it on your own.

Good luck on finding a theater to watch it in though. And you better be 18 or above. It's rated R.

Postscript:

The tag-line of the movie is Seek the Truth. Incidentally, that is also the title of this blog, albeit in Latin.

Quaere Verum.

It's been quite a while since I last posted a quiz result, so here's one. And I think it really hits home. :-)

What Do You Need in Your Life? [dark pics]

You need understanding.
In your life there has been many people that could never seem too comprehend your personality. Now you have either become an out-cast because of their narrow minds or you have adjusted yourself to them, and never letting them see who you are deep inside. You now think that no one will ever understand you and you hate that fact. Though you are scared of what the effects might be if you would decide to let someone in so you keep a safe distance that you both curse and bless.
Take this quiz!

Backup rig....

Posted by Unknown 0 komentar

After I've upgraded my main PC several weeks ago (see previous post here), I ended up with a surfeit of fully functional PC components just laying around the place.

Rather than disposing of them, I thought it would be a good idea to build a backup system around these components. It helps to have a second PC in case you have problems with your other computer, that is, there would always be one available that you can use to download drivers, utilities, and look up knowledge bases with. A second PC would also maximize the use of my broadband connection, and it would give my son a computer he can use anytime without waiting for me to finish what I'm doing.

Additionally, I thought it would be a good opportunity to build a system with a meager power draw that wouldn't suck up that much electricity when left on most of the time. My main rig is unsuited for this purpose since a lot of power hungry peripherals are installed in it.

Here's the system I ended up with:

Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting

Processor: AMD Athlon XP 2400+ (Thoroughbred-B core, 2.0 GHz, 256K L2 cache, 266 MHz FSB)
Motherboard: ECS K7VTA3 v3.1 (VIA Apollo KT333 chipset)
Memory: 1.5 GB PC2700 DDR333 SDRAM
Video: PowerColor 9550 (Radeon 9550 VPU with 128-bit 256 MB DDR SDRAM)
Sound: Motherboard-down (AC'97)
Hard Disk: Seagate Barracuda ATA IV ST380021A 80 GB 7,200 RPM
CD-Writer: Lite-On SOHC-5235K (DVD-ROM/CD-RW Combo)
Mouse & Keyboard: Logitech Cordless Desktop EX 110
Speakers: Labtec Pulse 385 (2.1)
Monitor: 15" Samsung SyncMaster 591s
Power Supply: Generic, 500 watts
CPU HSF: Coolermaster Aero 7 Lite

This is essentially my older PC, in new clothing, stripped down a bit and outfitted with less aggressive components.

While definitely not state-of-the-art, this rig will surely hold it's own against all comers by virtue of its 2.4 GHz class CPU, 1.5 GB of RAM, and DirectX 9.0 capabilities. It may not blow anyone away with its raw performance, but it's a respectable gaming rig and multimedia PC. And since it only has the bare essentials (with the exception of memory, which is quite capacious for it's intended use) it doesn't use up that much electrical power.

Hooked up to a network hub, it also has broadband access, not to mention it gives me an opportunity to blow up my son's forces in Command & Conquer Generals via LAN, much to his dismay. :-)

I'm pretty pleased with the way it turned out, especially in a classy black and gray ensemble.

Nothing like breathing new life to old PC parts. :-)

Megapixel monster....

Posted by Unknown Selasa, 16 Mei 2006 0 komentar

That's not a camera, that's a camera...:-)

Impressed by your 5, 6, 7, 8, or even 10 megapixel digital camera? Clearly you're easily impressed. Have a look at this 39 megapixel monster from Hasselblad:

To put that resolution into perspective, a single, uncompressed, RAW image taken with this camera will occupy about 78 MB of storage space. Compressed, about 50 MB. With that sort of resolution, you can take a portrait of someone and zoom in all the way to his or her zits. No, make that the zits on his or her zits. :-)

Not only is the resolution impressive, but the image quality also stands out, with the virtual elimination of color aberration and significant reduction in picture distortion. The size and weight of this digital is also nothing to sneeze at. Weighing in at 2,175 grams (that's more than two kilos, or almost five pounds), it's heft rivals, even exceeds that of full blown video cameras (especially those of lesser pedigree). It's not really unusual for professional digital cameras at this level to be huge, considering that they are almost completely modular, with a selection of lenses, viewfinders and digital backs at your disposal.

Based in Sweden, (clearly, Sweden has a lot more to offer the world than Volvo, Saab, ABBA, and Ace of Base) Hasselblad first established itself as a trading company in 1841, before entering photography in the 1890s as a distributor for Eastman (now known as Eastman Kodak). Hasselblad cameras (specifically, modified Hasselblad 500EL cameras) are best known for being the camera of choice in the Apollo moon missions (see this page). Twelve of them are still there in fact.

Going back to the H2D-39, are you curious to know how much it costs? Well, you can have one of these puppies for about $30,000.00 (that's P1,560,000.00), and that's a bargain for having the privilege of having the biggest, baddest DSLR on the block (maybe in the city, the country even). The camera backs (the CFH-39 and CF-39 models) each cost about the same as the camera itself, with the top-of-the-line CF-39MS costing you another $38,000.00 (P1,976,000.00).

This camera is cool and all, but if I had that sort of money, I'd probably buy a BMW instead. No. Make that two. :-)

32 Flavors
Ani DiFranco

Squint your eyes and look closer
I’m not between you and your ambition
I am a poster girl with no poster
I am thirty-two flavors and then some
And I’m beyond your peripheral vision
So you might want to turn your head
Cause someday you’re going to get hungry
And eat most of the words you just said

Both my parents taught me about good will
And I have done well by their names
Just the kindness I’ve lavished on strangers
Is more than I can explain
Still there’s many who’ve turned out their porch lights
Just so I would think they were not home
And hid in the dark of their windows
Til I’d passed and left them alone

And God help you if you are an ugly girl
Course too pretty is also your doom
Cause everyone harbors a secret hatred
For the prettiest girl in the room
And God help you if you are a phoenix
And you dare to rise up from the ash
A thousand eyes will smolder with jealousy
While you are just flying back

I’m not trying to give my life meaning
By demeaning you
And I would like to state for the record
I did everything that I could do
I’m not saying that I’m a saint
I just don’t want to live that way
No, I will never be a saint
But I will always say

Squint your eyes and look closer
I’m not between you and your ambition
I am a poster girl with no poster
I am thirty-two flavors and then some
And I’m beyond your peripheral vision
So you might want to turn your head
Cause someday you might find you’re starving
And eating all of the words you said

Candle in the dark....

Better to light one candle than to curse the darkness - Chinese proverb.

Thanks to typhoon Caloy (known internationally as Chanchu), power was out for almost the entire day. And we were lucky, some households only got power the day after.

Thank the heavens it was only power. The latest toll put the deaths as a result of typhoon Caloy at 37, mostly in the Bicol region and in the Visayas area. Poor souls. May God have mercy on them.

We would like to think that we're so technologically advanced, that we're immune from the elements. Nothing can be further from the truth.

When nature speaks, all we can do is listen.

High power bills? It could be your PC....

Posted by Unknown Jumat, 12 Mei 2006 0 komentar

No, really.

If you have a new or fairly new computer, and you've noticed your electrical bills go through the roof, your PC could be to blame.

While PCs today have reached a degree of technical sophistication and processing power unheard of only a few years ago, the price for performance seems to be electrical power, and lots of it.

It used to be that when buying or building a new PC, the primary considerations were performance, and cost. Nowadays, you have to factor in power consumption as well. If you're the type who leaves his or her PC on all the time, which is isn't really unheard of in these times with the popularity of broadband internet access, the cost of electricity can really add up significantly over time.

And the two biggest culprits are the brains of your PC, the Central Processing Unit (CPU), and (to a lesser degree) your video card (see earlier post here).

As far as contemporary CPUs are concerned, it seems that Intel processors are the worst offenders. To illustrate, here are the TDP (Thermal Design Power) figures (in watts) for low-end to high-midrange processors currently available here in the Philippine market (availability based on PC Express' product list):

Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting

Intel Celeron D 331 (2.66 GHz)1 - 84 watts
Intel Celeron D 336 (2.8 GHz)1 - 84 watts
Intel Pentium 4 506 (2.66 GHz)1 - 84 watts
Intel Pentium 4 511 (2.8 GHz)1 - 84 watts
Intel Pentium 4 630 (3.0 GHz)2 - 84 watts
Intel Pentium 4 640 (3.2 GHz)2 - 84 watts
Intel Pentium D 805 (2.66 GHz)3 - 95 watts
Intel Pentium D 820 (2.8 GHz)3 - 95 watts

1Prescott core.
2Prescott 2M core.
3Smithfield core (dual-core).

Note: All of the processors listed above utilize the Socket T or LGA 775 socket interface.

For comparison, here are the TDP figures for current AMD processors currently available in the Philippine market as well (availability based on PC Express' product list):

Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting

Sempron 2500+1 - 62 watts
Sempron 2600+1 - 62 watts
Sempron 2800+1 - 62 watts
Sempron 3000+2 - 62 watts
Sempron 3100+2 - 62 watts
Athlon 64 2800+3 - 89 watts
Athlon 64 3000+4 - 51 watts (Socket 754) 67 watts (Socket 939)
Athlon 64 3200+4 - 59 watts (Socket 754) 67 watts (Socket 939)

1Palermo core.
2Palermo/Paris core.
3Newcastle core.
4Venice core.

Note: All AMD processors listed above utilize the Socket 754 socket interface except for the Athlon 64 3000+ and 3200+ which are offered on both Socket 754 and Socket 939.

You will notice that except for the Athlon 64 2800+ (which is based on an older fabrication process), AMD processors typically consume less power than their Intel counterparts. AMD does not offer a dual-core processor equivalent to Intel's Pentium D 805 and 820, but for comparison, AMD lowest speed grade dual-core processor, the Athlon 64 X2 3800+, consumes 89 watts of power, which is 6 watts less than that used by lower end Pentium D processors. Interestingly, the Athlon 64 X2 3800+ is also significantly more powerful as far as processing is concerned, hence the higher model number designation.

Some of Intel's high end single core offerings, particularly those using the Prescott core running 3.4 GHz or higher could actually use up to 115 watts. As you would imagine, such processors would require aggressive cooling solutions to keep the heat in check. Now imagine running a PC with such a CPU installed running eight hours or more a day.

It's worth noting that most, if not all of the higher end processors (and some of the low end processors as well) from both Intel and AMD feature advanced power management technologies. Intel calls its power saving features SpeedStep®, AMD calls theirs Cool'n'Quiet™. While these technologies can lower power consumption significantly during idle periods, when the processor is active (which is to say, most of the time you're doing something) you'll still end up maxing out the power draw of your CPU whether you like it or not.

So what now?

Taking all of the foregoing information into consideration, here are some tips you may find useful when selecting what processor to choose for the next computer you build/buy:

  1. Don't buy more processing power than you need. Sure, you can splurge on the latest high speed single or dual-core processors, but if you really don't need the additional muscle, you'll just end up paying a premium with the initial purchase (the higher cost of the high-end processor, as well as the cost of a high wattage power supply, which is often a requirement when running high-end processors), not to mention the electrical bills you may incur in the long run;

  2. You should know that power consumption also has a direct correlation with heat production. Processors which consume more power invariably generate more heat, necessitating more robust cooling solutions and perhaps more fans. Processors with low power consumption run cooler;

  3. You may or may not be an AMD fan, but it can't be denied that AMD processors run cooler. While most newbies and tech unsavvy folk are often blinded by the Intel brand and therefore tend to gravitate towards one of their offerings, most techies in the know, and the vast majority of DIYers go AMD. AMD processors are at least as fast as their Intel counterparts, and oftentimes faster. In case you haven't heard, the argument about gigahertz being directly proportional to performance has long died, and clock frequency is no longer an effective indicator of relative performance as it once was. AMD processors are also usually cheaper. For example, an Athlon 64 3000+ costs about P6,800.00. A 3 GHz Pentium 4 cost about P9,000.00. While Sempron processors are a smidge more expensive than their counterpart Celeron processors, it should be noted that Semprons (the Socket 754 versions, not the older Socket A ones) are generally considered more powerful processors than Celerons according to most benchmarks;

  4. Whatever processor you buy, make sure that you enable the power management technologies that it supports. You are sure to save a few watts here and there if set up correctly;

  5. If you're really hardcore about saving electricity, get a laptop instead. Mobile processors, such as Intel's Pentium M, Celeron M or AMD's Turion 64 use up even less power, from as low as 35 watts or so for the higher end models, sometimes dipping to as low as 7 or 5 watts. Of course, when the power consumption is as low as this, performance often (though not always) takes a tumble.

And me, what processor do I use?

My main PC currently has a Athlon 64 3000+ processor, the Socket 754 variant. Maximum power draw? 51 watts. A 3 GHz equivalent rated part, using 33 watts less power than a 3 GHz Pentium 4. And just as fast, maybe even faster. Imagine that.

I guess now you ought to think twice now before purchasing that multi-gigahertz processor you've so longed for.

It seems that you pay for speed, in more ways than one.

  2. For my teenage daughter who is complaining about doing dishes, because that means she is at home & not on the streets.

  3. For the taxes that I pay because it means that I am employed.

  4. For the mess to clean after a party because it means that I have been surrounded by friends.

  5. For the clothes that fit a little too snug because it means I have enough to eat.

  6. For my shadow that watches me work because it means I am out in the sunshine.

  7. For a floor that needs mopping, and windows that need cleaning because it means I have a home.

  8. For all the complaining I hear about the government because it means that we have freedom of speech.

  9. For the parking spot I find at the far end of the parking lot because it means I am capable of walking and that I have been blessed with transportation.

  10. For the noise I have to bear from my neighbors because it means that I can hear.

  11. For the pile of laundry and ironing because it means I have clothes to wear.

  12. For weariness and aching muscles at the end of the day because it means I have been capable of working hard.

  13. For the alarm that goes off in the early morning hours because it means that I am stilll alive.

AND FINALLY ....... for received e-mails because it means I have friends who are thinking of me, at least.

Finally....

Posted by Unknown Selasa, 09 Mei 2006 0 komentar

After almost a month, PLDT finally informed me that they were downgrading my PLDT myDSL account without charging the P5,000.00 downgrading fee (see earlier post here).

All I can say is, it's about f***ing time.

It's a good thing they agreed. If not, I was all set to have my service cut off and go somewhere else for my broadband needs.

The clincher is, why should I pay double for supposedly up to 768 kbps of bandwidth, when what I'm getting is only 400 or so kbps?

Moral of the story?

Don't be afraid to speak out if some company is giving you a shoddy deal.

As a consumer, you have rights. And if you're not happy with the service or product you're receiving, take your business somewhere else.

You'll definitely be better off, rather than paying for something that simply isn't worth it.

Besides, that may be the only thing you can do to get back at them. In business, a client lost, is a client lost.

Five Lessons

Posted by Unknown Senin, 08 Mei 2006 0 komentar

Five (5) lessons to make you think about the way we treat people.

1 - First Important Lesson - Cleaning Lady

During my second month of college, our professor gave us a pop quiz. I was a conscientious student and had breezed through the questions until I read the last one:

"What is the first name of the woman who cleans the school?"

Surely this was some kind of joke. I had seen the cleaning woman several times. She was tall, dark-haired and in her 50s, but how would I know her name?

I handed in my paper, leaving the last question blank. Just before class ended, one student asked if the last question would count toward our quiz grade.

"Absolutely," said the professor. "In your careers, you will meet many people. All are significant. They deserve your attention and care, even if all you do is smile and say "hello."

I've never forgotten that lesson. I also learned her name was Dorothy.

2 - Second Important Lesson - Pickup in the Rain

One night, at 11:30 p.m., an older African American woman was standing on the side of an Alabama highway trying to endure a lashing rainstorm. Her car had broken down and she desperately needed a ride.

Soaking wet, she decided to flag down the next car.

A young white man stopped to help her, generally unheard of in those conflict-filled 1960s. The man took her to safety, helped her get assistance and put her into a taxicab.

She seemed to be in a big hurry, but wrote down his address and thanked him. Seven days went by and a knock came on the man's door. To his surprise, a giant console color TV was delivered to his home. A special note was attached...

It read:

"Thank you so much for assisting me on the highway the other night. The rain drenched not only my clothes, but also my spirits. Then you came along.

Because of you, I was able to make it to my dying husband's bedside just before he passed away...God bless you for helping me and unselfishly serving others."

Sincerely,

Mrs. Nat King Cole.

Note: I looked this up, turns out it never actually happened. Nonetheless, it still makes for a good story. :-)

3 - Third Important Lesson - Always remember those who serve

In the days when an ice cream sundae cost much less, a 10-year-old boy entered a hotel coffee shop and sat at a table. A waitress put a glass of water in front of him.

"How much is an ice cream sundae?" he asked.

"Fifty cents," replied the waitress.

The little boy pulled is hand out of his pocket and studied the coins in it.

"Well, how much is a plain dish of ice cream?" he inquired.

By now more people were waiting for a table and the waitress was growing impatient.

"Thirty-five cents," she brusquely replied.

The little boy again counted his coins.

"I'll have t he plain ice cream," he said.

The waitress brought the ice cream, put the bill on the table and walked away. The boy finished the ice cream, paid the cashier and left. When the waitress came back, she began to cry as she wiped down the table. There, placed neatly beside the empty dish, were two nickels and five pennies...

You see, he couldn't have the sundae, because he had to have enough left to leave her a tip.

4 - Fourth Important Lesson. - The obstacle in Our Path

In ancient times, a King had a boulder placed on a roadway. Then he hid himself and watched to see if anyone would remove the huge rock. Some of the king's wealthiest merchants and courtiers came by and simply walked around it. Many loudly blamed the
King for not keeping the roads clear, but none did anything about getting the stone out of the way.

Then a peasant came along carrying a load of vegetables. Upon approaching the boulder, the peasant laid down his burden and tried to move the stone to the side of the road. After much pushing and straining, he finally succeeded. After the peasant picked up his load of vegetables, he noticed a purse lying in the road where the boulder had been. The purse contained many gold coins and a note from the King indicating that the gold was for the person who removed the boulder from the roadway.

The peasant learned what many of us never understand!

Every obstacle presents an opportunity to improve our condition.

5 - Fifth Important Lesson - Giving When it Counts

Many years ago, when I worked as a volunteer at a hospital, I got to know a little girl named Liz who was suffering from a rare and serious disease. Her only chance of recovery appeared to be a blood transfusion from her 5-year old brother, who had miraculously survived the same disease and had developed the antibodies needed to combat the illness. The doctor explained the situation to her little brother, and asked the little boy if he would be willing to give his blood to his sister.

I saw him hesitate for only a moment before taking a deep breath and saying, "Yes I'll do it if it will save her." As the transfusion progressed, he lay in bed next to his sister and smiled, as we all did, seeing the color returning to her cheek. Then his face grew pale and his smile faded.

He looked up at the doctor and asked with a trembling voice, "Will I start to die right away?"

Being young, the little boy had misunderstood the doctor; he thought he was going to have to give his sister all of his blood in order to save her.

Old and tired....

Posted by Unknown 0 komentar

I must be getting old. Let me correct that. I am old. Is 33 old? It sure feels like it sometimes.

The Father of the Katipunan Andres Bonifacio died at 33 (1863-1897). Alexander the Great died at age 33 (356 BC-323 BC) The Oklahoma Bomber, Timothy McVeigh, was 33 when he was executed in 2001 (1968-2001). Jose Rizal died when he was about 35 (1861-1896). Actors John Belushi and Chris Farley died at 33. Even Jesus Christ was somewhere in that age bracket when he was crucified (8-2 BC - 29-36 AD).

Well, except for Timothy McVeigh who caused a lot of needless death and destruction, each and everyone of the names above managed to change the world or at least leave some legacy by the time they were in their thirties (arguably, McVeigh did that too, albeit in a negative way).

And me?

Am I dying? No, not really, except for the usual rate.

Could it be that I have passed my prime without realizing it?

Did life just pass me by without me being able to make a useful contribution to mankind?

*sigh*

Just about at the halfway mark for the average lifespan of Filipinos nowadays, and yet, still a lot of things to do, a lot of dreams unfulfilled.

It can be quite tiring, pursuing one's dream.

But that doesn't really mean that we should give up, right?

I guess I just need some balance in my life.

Maybe I should date someone younger. :-D

I must be getting senile in my old age...:-)

Light and Shade
Fra Lippo Lippi

He will paint the light and shade
The colors of the trees
He will climb the steepest hill
Believing what he sees

He will lay down on the ground
Beneath the old oak tree
He will sleep forever
If you try to set him free

Sail on the wings of the clouds
Where to well nobody knows
And cry, cry if you want them to see
Die, everyday to be free

Be proud, to wear the colors that you call your own
Be loud, speak out when you want the world to know
Be strong, hold the flame for everyone to see
Be weak, if you want to love.

He will paint the end as sea
A mystery to me
He will reach out for the sun
Not dreaming what he sees
He will fall down on his knees
Angel touching ground
Takes him to the other side
Sweet love is coming down

Sail on the wings of the clouds
Where to well nobody knows
And cry, cry if you want them to see
Die, everyday to be free

Be proud, to wear the colors that you call your own
Be loud, speak out when you want the world to know
Be strong, hold the flame for everyone to see
Be weak...

So if you want to sail on the wings of the clouds
Where to well nobody knows
And cry, cry if you want them to see
Die, everyday to be free

Be proud, to wear the colors that you call your own
Be loud, speak out when you want the world to know
Be strong, hold the flame for everyone to see
Be weak, if you want to love.

Baby body used in drug trafficking?

Posted by Unknown Jumat, 05 Mei 2006 0 komentar

Yesterday I received the following forwarded email from at least two people:

My sister's co-worker has a sister in Texas, who with her husband was planning a weekend trip across the Mexican border for a shopping spree.

At the last minute their baby sitter canceled, so they had to bring along their two year old son with them. They had been across the border for about an hour when the baby got free and ran around the corner. The mother went chasing, but the boy had disappeared. The mother found a police officer who told her to go to the gate and wait.

Not really understanding the instructions, she did as she was instructed. About 45 minutes later, a man approached the border carrying the boy. The mother ran to him, grateful that he had been found. When the man realized it was the boy's mother, he dropped the boy and ran himself. The police were waiting for him and got him.

The boy, dead, in the 45 minutes he was missing, was cut open, ALL of his insides removed and his body cavity stuffed with COCAINE.

The man was going to carry him across the border as if he were asleep.

A two year old boy, dead, discarded as if he were a piece of trash for somebody's cocaine.

If this story can get out and change one person's mind about what drugs mean to them, We are helping. Please send this E-mail to as many people as you can, if you have a home PC send it out there too.

Lets hope and pray it changes a lot of minds. The saddest thing about the whole situation is that those persons who suffer are innocent and people we love........

God Bless you in this united effort to spread the word. You just might save a life!

Thankfully, after some checking, it turns out that this story is nothing more than a three decade old urban legend. :-)

It supposedly first came into light in 1985, though it has been going around as early as 1973. It initially surfaced on the internet in 1996. According to United States Customs and police officials, this never happened. See details of this urban myth here, and here.

I guess some people are just prone to believing everything they read on the internet.

We can all rest easy now, well, as far as this myth is concerned. Just to recap, this story is not true. No need to lose sleep over it.

Of course, this story need not be true for use to realize the evils of illicit drugs.

Stay away from drugs! :-)

I disagree....

I was somewhat perturbed when when I read former Movie and Television Review and Classification Board (MTRCB) and Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office (PCSO) head Manuel Morato's column Uncensored, in yesterday's edition of the People's Journal.

You see, I've always been an admirer of Manoling. I even voted for him for Senator (believe it or not). I don't always agree with him, but I admire the fact that he doesn't compromise on matters of morality and that he has always had a clear stand on issues. He doesn't flip-flop or adopt a view just because it's popular, unlike some other politicians. He has been that way from the beginning, and he's still that way, up to now.

On the negative side, I find myself flat out disagreeing with some of his opinions, simply for the very reason that they often reek of sanctimony and self-righteousness, as if he and he alone should be making such decisions and interpretations for the rest of us. Of course, that may or may not be the intention, but his opinions certainly have that effect at times.

A good example is his column in question. In his May 4, 2006 piece entitled To summarize, I agree with some his points. No, make that strongly agree. His views on the death penalty moratorium issued by President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, charter change, and the apparent lack of morals among people in today's society are pretty spot on. However, when it comes to his take on the upcoming movie The Da Vinci Code, and the recently discovered lost Gospel of Judas, I find my myself shaking my head in strong disagreement.

I couldn't find a copy of his column online, so if you have a copy of yesterday's People's Journal, you can refer to the first two items in his column that I have quoted below. Please note that the following is exactly how the two topics in his column have been published. I initially thought of quoting a couple of snippets here and there, but to avoid putting the statements out of context, I have opted to quote the items in their entirety:

1. On The Da Vinci Code, the bottomline here is the law of the Republic which prohibits any film libelous or defamatory to the good name and reputation of any person, dead or alive, PD 1986 Section 3-C.

It is also prohibited, by law, to show movies that attack any race, creed or religion.

In short, we cannot allow any movie to be shown publicly that attacks and insults Mohammad, Buddha and more so, Christ, the Philippines being a Christian nation, the only one in Southeast Asia.

It is not a question of whether or not the viewers can take the move as a work of fiction. It is the law that says that we cannot allow such a movie to be shown. Period.

The Last Temptation of Christ is an earlier movie that attacks the divinity of Christ. The Da Vinci Code is a take-off from said movie, a continuation of some kind. That film was banned in many countries that are non-Christian such as Israel, Malaysia, New Guinea and many others including several States in the US. They all refused to show that movie in their theaters.

The so-called Da Vinci Code allegedly originated from painter Leonardo Da Vinci in the 15th and 16th centuries, or over 1,500 years after the death 0f Christ- purely based on the word of mouth from one person to another for so many centuries after the death of Christ.

Si Jose Rizal nga namatay over 100 years lang, ang dami nang mali ang nasulat tungkol sa buhay niya.

2. On the so-called Gospel of Judas naman written 380 years after the death of Christ by the so-called Gnostics (manghuhula), di rin natin puwedeng paniwalaan dahil hindi naman si Judas ang sumulat noon subalit sinasabi na Gospel of Judas. Nagbigti at nagpakamatay si Judas right after traydurin niya si Hesukristo. Paano pa makakasultat ang isang patay?

My reactions:

Libel, according to Art. 353 of the Revised Penal Code, is a public and malicious imputation of a crime, or of a vice or defect, real or imaginary, or any act, omission, condition, status or circumstance tending to cause the dishonor, discredit or contempt of a natural or juridical person, or to blacken the memory of one who is dead.

The elements of libel are: 1) imputation of a discreditable act or contion to another; 2) publication of the imputation; 3) identity of the person defamed; and 4) existence of malice (check out Punzi's blog-lecture on libel here).

This definition of libel as applied to P.D. 1986 simply cannot be used as a basis for prohibiting the exhibition of the The Da Vinci Code in local theaters.

Despite Mr. Morato's assertion of the immateriality of the fact that the film is a work of fiction, or of the public's ability to discern that it is indeed a work of fiction, it is, in fact, highly material. As a work of fiction, it does not present the events depicted therein as true. It is a fictional story, through and through. While there may be some historical basis for some background information in the plotlines, the important thing is that the movie (or the book of that matter) does not claim or present these events as true. That being the case, how can the film be libelous when it is missing one key ingredient, malice on the part of the author and filmmakers?

While The Last Temptation of Christ bears some similarity towards the precepts of The Da Vinci Code, the two are distinct works and tackle the issue of Christ's alleged marriage to Mary Magdalene in two totally different ways. In the former, the supposed relationship is averred to through an interlude, a deviation from the main story of Christ's crucifixion presented as a vision or fantasy sequence. It ends in the traditional way, with Christ dying as a means of atoning for our sins.

The Da Vinci Code is not a continuation per se. It explores the historical possibility that Christ indeed married Mary Magdalene and that their descendants still exist to the present day, that Mary Magdalene herself is the "Holy Grail". And this exploration is set forth in a fictional contemporary suspense thriller, a roller coaster of a story which eventually ends maintaining the status quo.

I wonder if Manuel Morato actually saw or read both movies/books?

And, considering the possibility, remote or not, that Jesus Christ was indeed married, and had children...does this diminish his divinity by even an iota? Honestly, I don't think so. But that's just me.

The so-called Da Vinci Code allegedly originated from painter Leonardo Da Vinci in the 15th and 16th centuries, or over 1,500 years after the death of Christ- purely based on the word of mouth from one person to another for so many centuries after the death of Christ.

He oversimplifies to the point of absurdity.

There is no "Da Vinci Code", so to speak, which has been passed on through word of mouth since the death of Christ. The idea of symbolism, a "code", being hidden in Da Vinci's works is a fairly modern idea, which while intriguing and interesting, has no clear historical basis.

And referring to Leonardo Da Vinci as a "painter" is as crude a reference as referring to Thomas Edison as an "electrician" or Albert Einstein as a "university teacher".

As for his take on the Gospel of Judas, I find his Filipino translation of gnostics as manghuhula ridiculous. A manghuhula is a fortune-teller. While gnostics are indeed mystics, to consider them, dismiss them as mere fortune-tellers is highly inaccurate. At the very least, gnostics are deep thinkers, devoted to the pursuit of knowledge.

di rin natin puwedeng paniwalaan dahil hindi naman si Judas ang sumulat noon subalit sinasabi na Gospel of Judas. Nagbigti at nagpakamatay si Judas right after traydurin niya si Hesukristo. Paano pa makakasultat ang isang patay?

It may surprise Mr. Morato to know that the authorship of the four canonical gospels (Matthew, Mark, Luke and John) is largely unknown. While Church tradition has generally attributed the authorship of these gospels to the apostles they were named after, there is no historical record to actually validate this. Scholars generally date the writing of the gospels to anywhere from 30 to 70 years after the death of Jesus Christ. As such, it is even entirely possible that the gospels could have been written after the lifetimes of Matthew, Mark, Luke and John.

To dismiss the authenticity of the Gospel of Judas simply because Judas Iscariot is supposedly dead at the time it was written seems overly convenient, considering that this premise could easily be applied to the four canonical gospels as well.

I'll leave it to the theology experts and biblical historians to come up with the best possible explanation for all of these.

I'm definitely not a theology expert, nor a biblical historian, but neither is Mr. Morato, at least, to the best of my knowledge.

At the very least, we should be careful making blanket dismissive statements such as the ones he made. In fairness, no one really knows the truth. He could easily be right as he could be wrong. The same goes for me and everyone else. We really don't know. We can only make educated guesses.

The bottomline? We should keep an open mind, and we should have faith.

And for the nth time, The Da Vinci Code is just a novel/movie!

And if he ever gets to read this entry, with all due respect sir, I disagree. :-)

A Mouse Story

Posted by Unknown Kamis, 04 Mei 2006 0 komentar

Photobucket - Video and Image HostingA mouse looked through the crack in the wall to see the farmer and his wife open a package.

"What food might this contain?" The mouse wondered - he was devastated to discover it was a mousetrap.

Retreating to the farmyard, the mouse proclaimed the warning.

"There is a mousetrap in the house! There is a mousetrap in the house!"

The chicken clucked and scratched, raised her head and said, "Mr. Mouse, I can tell this is a grave concern to you, but it is of no consequence to me. I cannot be bothered by it."

The mouse turned to the pig and told him, "There is a mousetrap in the house! There is a mousetrap in the house!"

The pig sympathized, but said, "I am so very sorry, Mr. Mouse, but there is nothing I can do about it but pray. Be assured you are in my prayers."

The mouse turned to the cow and said "There is a mousetrap in the house! There is a mousetrap in the house!"

The cow said, "Wow, Mr. Mouse. I'm sorry for you, but it's no skin off my nose."

So, the mouse returned to the house, head down and dejected, to face the farmer's mousetrap alone.

That very night a sound was heard throughout the house -- like the sound of a mousetrap catching its prey.

The farmer's wife rushed to see what was caught. In the darkness, she did not see it was a venomous snake whose tail the trap had caught.

The snake bit the farmer's wife. The farmer rushed her to the hospital, and she returned home with a fever. Everyone knows you treat a fever with fresh chicken soup, so the farmer took his hatchet to the farmyard for the soup's main ingredient.

But his wife's sickness continued, so friends and neighbors came to sit with her around the clock. To feed them, the farmer butchered the pig.

The farmer's wife did not get well; she died. So many people came for her funeral, the farmer had the cow slaughtered to provide enough meat for all of them.

The mouse looked upon it all from his crack in the wall with great sadness.

So, the next time you hear someone is facing a problem and think it doesn't concern you, remember -- when one of us is threatened, we are all at risk.

We are all involved in this journey called life. We must keep an eye out for one another and make an extra effort to encourage one another.

Thanks to Rain for this one. :-)
